What are free radicals?

April 19th, 2022

We all hear the term free radicals and free radical damage, and we all know they aren't good for you. But what are they?

Free Radicals are atoms or a group of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and is unstable and highly reactive. They can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Different factors such as diet, stress, smoking, alcohol, exercise, inflammation, drugs, exposure to sunlight and pollution can form free radicals. A free radical is stable when the atoms outermost shell is full, when the outermost shell is not full it becomes unstable. Atoms want to be stable so when they have become unbalanced they will either lose an electron or look for another atom to complete its outermost shell creating a bond with the other atom. These bonds are week and break causing the atom to lose an electron, become unstable and chemically reactive. This creates a vicious cycle causing this newly unstable molecule to seek another atom to steal and electron from another atom. This is called a cascade, a chain reaction that wreaks havoc on living tissue. There are many free radicals but the most common are oxygen free radicals known as Reactive Oxygen Species. Oxygen free radicals play a large roll in the overall aging process and are responsible for premature aging, hyperpigmentation (dark spots in the skin), different types of cancer including skin cancer, inflamation, damage to cell membranes and even cell death.

Benefits of regular facials

April 19th, 2022

As I was reading my monthly Skin Deep magazine, I came across an article that made me think of a better way to talk about Facials. I find that most people tend to think of Facials as something of an extravagant way to relax. We work out and eat healthy, go to the Doctor, Ophthalmologist and dentist for regular checkups all in an effort to maintain and take care of ourselves. I want to change your way of thinking and introduce you to what a Facial really is for your skin, “Facial Fitness.” Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body and it is the first line of defense we have to anything and everything we come into contact with?

The benefits you will experience by receiving regular facials will transform your skin and help to maintain those results. Deep cleansing removes debris, some dead skin cells, promotes lymph drainage (removes toxins from your body and decreases puffiness) and increases circulation. Steaming helps to soften the surface layer of the skin, free dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria, and prepares the pores for extraction (the process of clearing out clogged or compacted pores by manual or mechanical means). Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells which smooth’s the surface of the skin, helps to diminish skin discolorations by brightening your complexion, speeds up your skins natural renewal process and paves the way for products to penetrate deeper into the skin. Not only is the facial massage stress relieving. It has great benefits by significantly increasing microcirculation (oxygenates the skin bringing nutrients which is food for your cells), has a toning effect on your facial muscles and further prepares the skin for increased product penetration. A facial mask can be customized with serums to moisturize, purify, detoxify, reduce inflammation or increase circulation, add antioxidants and replenish nutrients to the skin. Finally moisturizing and protecting the skin with an SPF will assist in rebuilding the skin’s lipid barrier (ceramides, free fatty acids, and cholesterol), lock in performance ingredients, and protect your skin from future UV damage.

Discussing your skin concerns with your Esthetician you will be able to achieve noticeable results through a series of facials and/or help maintain the results achieved through facials, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

It’s time we start thinking of our skin care as “Facial Fitness” or better yet “Skin Fitness” taking care of and maintaining your skin.
